Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka – A 69-year-old woman has died due to Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), commonly known as monkey fever, in the Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka. This incident has raised concerns among health officials and local residents.

The deceased was a resident of Kattinamane in N.R. Pura taluk. Reports indicate that the woman contracted the viral infection, which is transmitted through tick bites.

KFD is a viral hemorrhagic fever endemic to parts of Karnataka. The disease is characterized by symptoms such as high fever, headache, muscle pain, and bleeding.

Health officials are now urging residents, particularly those living in or near forested areas, to take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the disease. These precautions include:

  • Avoiding contact with ticks.
  • Using tick repellents.
  • Wearing protective clothing.
  • Vaccination when available.

The health department has also stated that they are increasing surveillance and taking all the necessary steps to prevent the further spread of the KFD disease. Additionally, there are reports that work is being done to produce a new vaccine for KFD, with the hope of it becoming available by 2026.

The Malnad region has been witnessing a rise in KFD cases, and this fatality highlights the ongoing threat posed by the disease. Residents are advised to seek immediate medical attention if they experience any symptoms.
