April 29, 2025 – New Delhi:
A groundbreaking technology developed by Korean researchers promises to revolutionize the diagnosis of arthritis, enabling doctors to accurately distinguish between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in just 10 minutes using body fluids.

A Leap Forward in Arthritis Diagnosis

According to recent studies, over 50% of people aged 65 and older experience osteoarthritis symptoms, while rheumatoid arthritis affects about 1 in 100 people during their lifetime. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial, as these two conditions differ significantly in both causes and treatments. Traditionally, diagnosis has relied on X-rays, MRI scans, and blood tests-methods that are often time-consuming, expensive, and sometimes limited in accuracy.

The Science Behind the Innovation

The research team, led by the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) in collaboration with Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, focused on analyzing synovial fluid-the lubricating fluid found in human joints. By examining metabolic byproducts within this fluid, the scientists developed a method to distinguish between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as to assess the severity of rheumatoid arthritis.

Utilizing Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) technology, which amplifies molecular signals millions of times, the team could detect trace substances responsible for arthritis. This was achieved through a combination of AI-based analysis and advanced mathematical algorithms.

A Simple, Rapid, and Accurate Test

The researchers also created a sensor using a sea urchin-shaped gold nanostructure on a highly absorbent paper surface, allowing for efficient detection from body fluids. In clinical tests involving 120 patients, the new technology demonstrated over 94% accuracy in diagnosing and distinguishing between the two types of arthritis, and more than 95% accuracy in determining the severity of rheumatoid arthritis.

Looking Ahead

“If this technology is commercialised, it will not only aid in diagnosis but also be highly useful in monitoring treatment progress,” said Dr. Ho Sang Jung, lead researcher at KIMS. The team plans to expand their research to cover a broader range of diseases in the future.

Impact and Potential

This innovative approach could dramatically reduce both the time and cost associated with arthritis diagnosis, while ensuring high diagnostic accuracy. If widely adopted, it may improve patient outcomes by enabling earlier and more precise treatment.
