Kolkata, India – A recent internal survey conducted by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has revealed that approximately 44% of the city’s wards are considered dengue-prone. The survey, released on Tuesday, highlights significant areas of concern within the KMC’s jurisdiction, which includes Kolkata and its added areas.
According to the survey, out of the 144 wards under the KMC, 68 have been identified as dengue hotspots. This classification is based on a benchmark where wards reporting 10 or more dengue cases in the previous year are designated as high-risk areas.
A KMC official explained, “The corporation mapped all 144 wards to identify dengue-prone pockets based on past figures. If 10 or more persons in a particular ward tested positive for dengue last year, that ward is identified as a hotspot.”
Despite the high number of vulnerable wards, the survey also noted a significant decrease in dengue cases in 2024. The number of positive cases dropped to 1,316 from 13,926 in 2023. In the first three months of 2024, 45 cases have been recorded in Kolkata.
“This improvement was achieved because last year the KMC took special drives to prevent stagnation of water, spraying of chemicals through fogging machines, and penalizing house owners careless of preventing water stagnation,” the official stated. “For the current year, the corporation wants to be especially careful of the preventive measures, and this is why area-wise mapping has been done.”
The KMC plans to implement stricter measures to prevent dengue outbreaks, including issuing notices to defaulting house owners and housing societies. In cases of continued negligence, the corporation will register FIRs with the assistance of the city police.
The survey comes amid previous accusations from the opposition BJP, led by Suvendu Adhikari, who alleged that the Trinamool Congress government had underreported dengue cases in the state, including Kolkata.
The KMC aims to maintain vigilance and enforce preventive measures to mitigate the risk of dengue outbreaks in the identified hotspot wards.
