Specific nutrients, namely Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and polyphenols, are highlighted for their potent anti-inflammatory properties.
Dr. Upasana Arora, MD of Yashoda Super Speciality Hospital, Kaushambi, emphasized the role of Vitamin C. “Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals, thereby reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. It also plays a vital role in supporting immune function and collagen synthesis, which aids in tissue repair,” she explained. Foods abundant in Vitamin C include citrus fruits, bell peppers, strawberries, and leafy greens.
The benefits of Vitamin E were also underscored. “Vitamin E, particularly in its tocopherol and tocotrienol forms, helps protect cell membranes from oxidative damage and regulates inflammatory responses,” stated Dr. Arora. “Studies have shown that adequate Vitamin E intake can lower inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP).” Excellent sources of Vitamin E include nuts, seeds, spinach, and avocados.
Dr. Bhavna Garg, senior consultant, dietitian and nutritionist at Yashoda Super Speciality Hospital, Kaushambi, further elaborated on the importance of polyphenols. “Polyphenols are plant compounds with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. They regulate inflammation by modulating pathways like NF-κB, which controls inflammatory cytokine production,” she said. Rich sources of polyphenols include berries, dark chocolate, green tea, and olive oil.
Experts recommend a diet rich in colorful fruits, vegetables, nuts, and plant-based foods to naturally combat chronic inflammation. Prioritizing whole foods ensures better bioavailability and enhanced health benefits.
