Malappuram, Kerala, May 31, 2025 — In a significant development for Kerala’s public health sector, the state’s only Nipah virus patient from the recent outbreak has been declared virus-free. Kerala Health Minister Veena George announced on Friday that the 42-year-old woman from Valanchery, Malappuram district, has tested negative for Nipah virus in two consecutive samples, marking a major milestone in her recovery.
Patient Shows Signs of Recovery
The patient, who initially tested positive on May 8, was treated at EMS Cooperative Hospital in Perinthalmanna. According to Minister George, she has been off ventilator support for the past 12 days and is now breathing independently. “Internal organs like the liver and kidneys are functioning normally. Although the patient has not yet regained full consciousness, brain activity is gradually showing signs of improvement,” the minister stated.
Doctors at the hospital reported that recent MRI scans indicate healing in areas of the brain previously affected by the virus. The patient has started showing subtle responses to pain and some movement in her eyes and jaw, offering hope for a full recovery. Medical staff are optimistic that she could be discharged in the coming weeks with complete physical and mental recovery.
No New Cases and Continued Vigilance
The Health Minister confirmed that the virus’s incubation period has passed without any new cases being reported in the state. However, she assured that support services and helplines will remain operational for a few more days as a precautionary measure. The patient continues to be closely monitored by a critical care team at the hospital.
Advanced Treatment Credited for Improved Outcomes
Minister George highlighted the role of advanced treatments, including Remdesivir and monoclonal antibodies provided by the Indian Council of Medical Research, in improving patient outcomes. “When Nipah first struck Kerala, the fatality rate exceeded 90 per cent. However, since 2021, with the use of antiviral drugs and monoclonal antibody treatment, the rate has dropped, falling to 33 per cent in 2023,” she said.
The successful recovery of the patient is being seen as a testament to Kerala’s robust healthcare response and the effectiveness of new treatment protocols.
