Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – The ongoing protest by Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers in Kerala has escalated dramatically, with an indefinite hunger strike launched outside the state secretariat. This decisive action underscores the deepening healthcare crisis stemming from unresolved demands for increased honorarium and incentives.

The ASHA workers, who have been protesting for 39 days, intensified their agitation after talks with the state government collapsed on Wednesday. Their primary demands center on a significant increase in their current honorariums, reflecting the crucial role they play in the state’s healthcare system.

State Health Minister Veena George’s efforts to mediate the situation by seeking a meeting with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda in Delhi proved unsuccessful. According to reports, Nadda was unavailable, further fueling the protestors’ frustration.

The situation is compounded by a financial standoff between the state and central governments. The central government has withheld funds, citing the state’s failure to provide a pending utilization certificate.4 This has been a source of increased tension.

Adding to the complexity, despite Union Health Minister J.P Nadda’s parliamentary declarations of increased incentives for ASHA workers, the current impasse remains. V.D. Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, has highlighted the unresolved nature of the issue.

The protestors, who have garnered support from Congress-led UDF MLAs, accuse the state government of neglect and corruption. The hunger strike signals a significant escalation in their efforts to bring attention to their grievances and force a resolution.

The ASHA workers’ demands highlight the critical role they play in Kerala’s healthcare system, particularly in rural areas. Their continued protest poses a significant challenge to the state government and raises concerns about the potential impact on public health services.
