Kerala is set to take a significant step in the fight against cervical cancer by administering the HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine to plus one and plus two girl students, Health Minister Veena George announced on Monday. The initiative aims to eliminate cervical cancer from the state and will be implemented following a high-level meeting chaired by the minister in Thiruvananthapuram. A final decision regarding the sourcing of the vaccine is expected after a technical committee meeting scheduled for next week.

Cervical cancer is a pressing concern in Kerala, ranking as the third most common cancer among women after breast and thyroid cancers. According to a recent Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) study, 7.9% of female cancer patients in the state are diagnosed with cervical cancer. The study highlighted that the breast is the most commonly affected site (73.35%), followed by the thyroid (24.9%).

Experts emphasize that cervical cancer, primarily caused by the human papillomavirus, is preventable through vaccination. Health authorities note that the HPV vaccine is most effective for girls aged 9 to 14, but it can still offer benefits up to age 261.

Earlier this year, the state government conducted a large-scale screening program for women over 30, targeting both cervical and breast cancers. Over 1.7 million women have already been screened through this initiative. The upcoming HPV vaccination drive for school girls is seen as the next logical step in reducing overall cancer rates in Kerala.

In addition to vaccinations, a comprehensive awareness campaign will be launched to inform students, parents, and teachers about the HPV vaccine and its benefits in preventing cervical cancer. The campaign aims to foster widespread participation and support.
