Kerala is witnessing a worrying spike in Hepatitis A cases this year, with more than 5,000 people infected and 35 confirmed deaths reported so far. The outbreak has raised serious concerns among health authorities and the public, as fatalities from Hepatitis A are typically rare.
Last year, the state recorded 7,967 cases and 89 deaths, a sharp increase compared to previous years when annual fatalities ranged between just 2 and 15. Health experts attribute the current surge primarily to contaminated water sources and unhygienic food practices, which continue to facilitate the spread of the virus.
Doctors across Kerala are strongly urging residents to get vaccinated against Hepatitis A. However, vaccination rates remain low. Most people who do receive the vaccine are students applying for academic programs that require health certificates, or those attending medical camps. The main deterrent for many is the cost, as the Hepatitis A vaccine is only available in the private sector and is not part of the central government’s free vaccination program.
A single dose of the vaccine can offer protection for up to a year, a measure that experts say could significantly curb further transmission. Dr. S. Ranjith Kumar, Consultant Physician at Alappuzha General Hospital, emphasized, “Although Hepatitis A is not as severe as Hepatitis B, C, D, or E, it can pose serious threats to individuals with low immunity or underlying health conditions. In some cases, it can lead to complete liver failure and even death. Vaccination can significantly reduce both the mortality rate and spread of infection”.
Authorities continue to stress the importance of safe drinking water and proper food hygiene, alongside vaccination, to control the outbreak.
