Kerala’s health authorities have issued a high alert across three districts—Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Palakkad—following the death of an 18-year-old in Malappuram due to Nipah virus infection. The state government confirmed two positive cases, with samples sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for final confirmation. As a precaution, rigorous containment and contact tracing measures have been activated across the affected regions.

Outbreak Response Intensifies

A total of 345 contacts have been traced so far: 211 in Malappuram, 91 in Palakkad, and 43 in Kozhikode. Twenty-six committees have been set up in each district to oversee outbreak response, including contact tracing, containment planning, and public communication. Police have been enlisted to assist in these efforts. District Collectors have been instructed to prepare for the declaration of containment zones if required, and helplines at both state and district levels are being activated.

Symptoms and Risks

Nipah virus is a bat-borne, zoonotic pathogen with a mortality rate ranging from 40% to 75%. It presents with symptoms similar to viral fever and influenza, making early diagnosis challenging. Infected individuals may experience fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, sore throat, dizziness, altered consciousness, and in severe cases, fatal encephalitis or atypical pneumonia. Since 2018, Kerala has experienced five Nipah outbreaks, resulting in 22 deaths and only seven survivors.

Ongoing Investigation and Preventive Measures

The source of the current infections remains under investigation. Health Minister Veena George emphasized that containment protocols are being implemented as a matter of abundant caution while awaiting the final results from NIV Pune. The government is also considering the deployment of mobile biosafety laboratories to enhance onsite diagnostic capacity, as used in previous outbreaks.

Public Advisory

Residents in the affected districts are urged to remain vigilant, follow official guidance, and report any symptoms promptly to health authorities. The state government has assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to prevent further spread of the virus.
