THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — The Kerala Department of Health and Family Welfare has given its nod to a groundbreaking initiative to establish Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centres (IEDCs) in all government medical colleges and hospitals across the state. This strategic move aims to cultivate a robust health-tech innovation ecosystem by leveraging the expertise of medical students, doctors, and researchers.

The decision follows a long-standing proposal by the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) and the Indian Medical Association (IMA). While similar innovation centers are already thriving in engineering, arts, and science colleges, their introduction into the medical field is a significant step towards bridging the gap between clinical knowledge and technological development.

These new centers are envisioned as a unique platform where a doctor’s clinical insight can be transformed into a tangible, high-impact healthcare solution. They will empower medical professionals and students to drive innovation, from the initial ideation phase to final commercialization. The IEDCs will concentrate on three core areas: medical technology and devices, digital health solutions, and innovative models for healthcare service delivery.

By fostering collaboration between medical and engineering graduates, the initiative is poised to position Kerala’s medical colleges as key players in shaping the future of healthcare innovation in India. In addition to the IEDCs, a Health Tech Hub is also planned for development at the Apex Trauma and Emergency Learning Centre (ATELC) in Thiruvananthapuram, further strengthening the state’s commitment to health innovation.
