A high-profile investigation is underway in Kerala after Dr. Haris Chirackal, a government doctor, alleged a critical shortage of essential medical equipment and supplies in his department—claims he says are directly impacting patient care. The probe was ordered by State Health Minister Veena George, following a social media post by Dr. Chirackal that quickly drew widespread public attention and support before he later withdrew it.

Dr. Chirackal stated that persistent shortages were delaying patient treatment and expressed frustration over what he described as repeated, unanswered requests for support. Despite withdrawing his post, he stood by his claims when questioned by the probe team, submitting supporting documents as evidence.

The controversy has put Health Minister Veena George under mounting pressure, particularly from the opposition. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan criticized the government’s management of the healthcare sector, stating, “We have long maintained that the health sector is on ventilator support while the Minister survives on PR. This revelation only exposes the reality. We have now appointed a five-member expert panel to prepare a detailed report and suggest a road map for the sector”.

However, the probe team also questioned several other doctors, some of whom reportedly disagreed with Dr. Chirackal’s assessment of the situation.

Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal responded to the allegations, denying any reduction in health sector funding and promising to release a detailed breakdown of allocations soon.

The outcome of the expert panel’s investigation is awaited as both public and political scrutiny over Kerala’s healthcare infrastructure intensifies.
