Bengaluru, March 31 – In a landmark move aimed at bolstering organ donation and transplantation services, the Karnataka government has announced the establishment of South India’s first government-run Organ Transplant and Retrieval Centre in Bengaluru. Minister for Medical Education, Skill Development and Livelihood, Sharan Prakash Patil, made the announcement on Monday, highlighting the significance of this initiative.
The new centre, to be located at Victoria Hospital, is expected to streamline the process of organ procurement from deceased donors, providing comprehensive services including ICU facilities, an operation theatre, a laboratory, and advanced diagnostic capabilities. To expedite the transportation of organs, the government is also constructing a helipad at Victoria Hospital.
Minister Patil revealed that Rs 1 crore has been sanctioned for the development and establishment of the centre. “This initiative is highly meaningful and will benefit economically-disadvantaged patients,” he stated. An official order has already been issued to facilitate the modernization of existing facilities and the setting up of the organ retrieval centre.
The establishment of this centre coincides with the 125th anniversary of Victoria Hospital, marking a significant milestone for the institution, which is already one of South India’s largest medical facilities. The hospital currently houses a trauma and emergency care centre, the Institute of Gastroenterology and Urology Transplantation, the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology at Minto Hospital, and a Skin Bank.
“The centre will play a crucial role in streamlining organ procurement for transplants,” Minister Patil emphasized. He further outlined the critical aspects of effective organ donation, including identifying potential donors, ensuring safe procedures, conducting family counselling, providing advanced ICU care, and adhering to legal frameworks. Adequate funding has been allocated for the centre’s holistic development to ensure these aspects are met.
Dr. Deepak, Medical Superintendent of Victoria Hospital, stated, “The establishment of an integrated organ retrieval centre at Victoria Hospital will help scale up the organ donation programme, benefiting underprivileged patients. The centre will have dedicated staff, ICUs and beds. Once a family consents to organ donation, the patient will be transferred from ICUs to the designated facility.”
The organ retrieval centre is expected to become operational within the next four to six months. The Victoria Hospital caters to the economically weaker sections of society, making this new facility a crucial addition to its services.
