Bengaluru, June 16, 2025 — Even as the results of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-2025) have been declared, the Department of Medical Education (DME), Karnataka, is yet to release the medical seat matrix for the academic year 2025-26, leading to uncertainty among aspirants and authorities alike.

The delay comes despite the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) preparing to conduct the Common Entrance Test (CET-2025) and NEET counselling simultaneously for admissions to professional courses. KEA had set a deadline of June 4, 2025, for the submission of the seat matrix, which has since passed without the DME releasing the required information.

According to official sources, the primary reason for the delay is the pending approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) for the proposed increase in undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) medical seats across the state. In March 2025, the DME submitted a proposal to the NMC seeking an enhancement of 800 MBBS and 700 PG medical seats for Karnataka. However, despite three months having elapsed, the NMC has not yet granted permission for the seat enhancement.

Currently, Karnataka has 71 medical colleges with an intake capacity of 12,395 MBBS seats for the current academic year. The state also boasts 3,355 dental seats in 45 dental colleges, 39,595 BSc Nursing seats in 650 nursing colleges, 16,441 Allied Health Sciences seats in 202 colleges, and 5,710 seats in 120 Physiotherapy colleges. For postgraduate programs, there are 4,027 PG medical seats in 47 colleges, 846 MDS seats in 31 dental colleges, 4,772 PG nursing seats in 204 colleges, 1,217 PG allied health sciences seats in 43 colleges, and 819 PG physiotherapy seats in 41 colleges.

The DME has already prepared a tentative seat matrix for 2025-26, which includes the proposed additional seats and new government medical colleges in Ramanagara and the Farookh Academy of Medical Education in Mysuru. However, the official release is contingent upon NMC’s approval.

Speaking to The Hindu, DME Director B.L. Sujatha Rathod stated, “It is not known why the NMC is delaying the increase in seats in medical courses. Already, the NMC has served show-cause notices to 22 government medical colleges and several private medical colleges that are facing problems, including non-appointment of necessary faculty. We have given an appropriate response to the NMC in this regard. So, we are hoping that we may get permission to increase the UG and PG medical seats before the NEET results. The matrix will be submitted as soon as the NMC gives permission.”

Meanwhile, Karnataka continues to urge the NMC to expedite the process, especially as the number of NEET aspirants surges and the admission season looms.
