Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has announced a new initiative to protect healthcare workers from hepatitis B infection by rolling out a statewide vaccination drive targeting medical professionals and support staff across both government and private healthcare facilities.

The decision comes in response to the persistent risk of hepatitis B transmission faced by healthcare workers due to occupational exposure to blood and bodily fluids. According to health officials, the vaccination campaign is expected to significantly reduce the incidence of hepatitis B among frontline medical personnel, who are at heightened risk due to their daily interactions with patients.

Dr. K. Sudhakar, Karnataka’s Health Minister, emphasized the importance of the drive, stating that it is a crucial step in safeguarding the health and well-being of those who dedicate their lives to caring for others. The vaccination will be administered free of charge to all eligible healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, and hospital support staff.

The program will be implemented in phases, beginning with major government hospitals and gradually extending to private healthcare institutions. Health authorities have also planned awareness sessions to educate healthcare workers about the importance of vaccination and preventive measures against hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that attacks the liver and can cause both acute and chronic disease. The virus is transmitted through contact with infectious body fluids, making healthcare workers particularly vulnerable.

Health officials are confident that the initiative will not only improve the safety of medical professionals but also contribute to overall public health by reducing the spread of hepatitis B within the community.
