BENGALURU – In a pioneering move to combat the growing incidence of cardiac issues among professional drivers, the Karnataka state government has initiated a new heart health screening program. The initiative, announced by Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, specifically targets autorickshaw and cab drivers, a demographic identified as being at high risk for cardiovascular disease.
The program comes in response to alarming data from the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, which revealed that 20-30% of last year’s heart attack cases were among drivers. This trend is attributed to a combination of factors common to their profession, including prolonged stress, sedentary lifestyles, and constant exposure to air pollution.
By focusing on early detection and preventative care, the government aims to mitigate the health risks faced by this essential workforce. While this program is currently dedicated to drivers, the state is also considering similar cardiovascular screenings for school children and is exploring a broader CPR training campaign for the general public.
