The Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Department has taken decisive action to protect public health by imposing a comprehensive ban on the sale, consumption, advertisement, promotion, collection, and trade of all hookah products across the state with immediate effect.

In a press release issued by the department, it was emphasized that the ban encompasses all types of hookah products, regardless of their composition or flavor. This includes tobacco or nicotine-containing hookah, non-nicotine variants, tobacco-free options, flavored and unflavored varieties, molasses, shisha, and similar products marketed under different names.

The directive outlines strict measures to be taken against violators under a range of regulations, including the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA)-2003, Child Care and Protection Act, 2015, Food Safety and Quality Act-2006, Karnataka Poisons (Possession and Sale) Rules 2015, Indian Penal Code, and Fire Control and Fire Safety Act.

Highlighting the potential risks associated with hookah consumption in hotels, bars, and restaurants, the Department of Health and Family Welfare underscored the threat posed to the safety of food items meant for public consumption and the adverse effects on public health. In alignment with Article 47 of the Constitution, which mandates the state government to protect public health, the department deemed it imperative to implement the ban in the best interest of the people.

This proactive measure by the Karnataka government reflects its commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its citizens and underscores the importance of stringent regulations to mitigate the harmful effects of hookah use. By prohibiting the sale and consumption of hookah products, the state aims to protect individuals from the potential health hazards associated with these products and promote a healthier environment for all residents.
