Bengaluru, 18 August — Amid growing public anxiety about a perceived rise in heart attack cases, Karnataka Medical Education and Skill Development Minister Sharanaprakash R. Patil has reassured citizens, urging them not to panic unnecessarily. Speaking in the legislative council, the minister emphasized that recent statistics do not show a significant increase in heart attacks compared to previous years, with only 5–6% of cases being heart-related, consistent with historical trends.

Minister Patil attributed heart disease primarily to modifiable risk factors such as sedentary lifestyle, stress, obesity, alcohol, smoking, drug abuse, and family history. He advised citizens to focus on preventive strategies—including regular exercise, pranayama, a healthy diet, adequate sleep, and stress reduction.

Addressing public concerns linking post-COVID effects to heart attack cases, the minister noted, “There is no evidence of such a connection.” He cited findings from a government-appointed committee led by Dr. K.S. Ravindranath from Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, confirming that recent fears are unfounded.

To further strengthen cardiac care, Minister Patil announced mandatory establishment of super-speciality hospitals in all district government hospitals across Karnataka, under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s directive. Several new and upgraded facilities are set to open in the coming months, including trauma centers, expanding the reach of advanced cardiac treatment.

Notably, following recommendations from an expert committee studying the relationship between COVID-19 vaccination and cardiovascular events, the state health department has designated sudden heart attack deaths among people under 45 as “notifiable” since July 7.
