Karnataka, February 7: In a shocking incident at a government-run Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Adoor village, Haveri district, a staff nurse has been suspended for allegedly using Fevikwik, an instant adhesive, instead of medical stitches to treat a seven-year-old boy’s facial wound.
The incident reportedly took place on January 14 when the injured child was brought to the PHC after sustaining a cheek injury while playing. The nurse, identified as Jyothi, justified her actions by claiming that applying stitches would leave permanent scars on the boy’s face, The Indian Express reported.
The situation took a turn for the worse when the child’s condition deteriorated. Concerned about the worsening injury, the boy’s parents raised the alarm on social media, which prompted swift action from the authorities. Following an internal inquiry, the Health and Family Welfare Department suspended Jyothi for negligence and dereliction of duty.
In response to the controversy, the Commissioner’s Office of the Department of Health and Family Welfare released an official statement: “Fevikwik is an adhesive solution not permitted for medical use under regulations. In this case, the staff nurse responsible for dereliction of duty by using Fevikwik for the child’s treatment has been suspended following a preliminary report and pending further investigation as per rules.”
Health officials have assured that the child is in stable condition and that authorities are monitoring for any adverse effects resulting from the use of the adhesive.
This incident has raised serious concerns about medical protocols and the standards followed in government health centers. The Health Department has reiterated the importance of adhering to proper medical procedures and has assured stringent action against any violations.
