BENGALURU, June 3, 2025:
In a significant push towards preventive healthcare, the Karnataka government has announced the expansion of its Gruha Arogya scheme across the entire state. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao made the announcement on Monday during a workshop at Vikasa Soudha, highlighting the government’s commitment to early detection and management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Statewide Rollout for Early Detection
Originally launched in Kolar district, the Gruha Arogya scheme will now provide free screening for 14 NCDs—including diabetes, hypertension, and various forms of cancer—to residents throughout Karnataka. The initiative targets individuals aged above 30, with door-to-door health checks conducted by Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers.

Minister Rao emphasized the urgent need for government intervention in preventive healthcare, stating, “NCDs have become serious health threats and cannot be left to the private sector alone, which tends to focus on treatment over prevention. It is the government’s responsibility to prevent these diseases before they reach critical stages.”

How the Scheme Works
To facilitate the expanded rollout, the Health Department has released a comprehensive manual for ASHA workers and health officers. ASHA workers will visit homes to raise awareness about NCDs and refer residents to nearby Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, where community health officers will conduct the actual screenings.

Screening data will be entered into the NCD portal, ensuring real-time tracking and follow-up. Patients diagnosed with conditions such as diabetes and hypertension will receive free medication immediately. Those with more serious conditions will be referred to higher-level hospitals for further treatment.

Aiming to Reduce the Burden of Chronic Diseases
The ultimate goal of the Gruha Arogya scheme, according to Minister Rao, is to reduce the burden of chronic diseases by identifying and managing them at an early stage. The government hopes this proactive approach will lead to improved health outcomes and reduced healthcare costs in the long run.
