A resident doctor in Jodhpur is in critical condition after allegedly attempting suicide by consuming a sulphos tablet, a highly toxic pesticide containing aluminium phosphide, on Thursday. The incident has sent shockwaves through the medical community and reignited concerns about the mental health crisis among healthcare professionals.

The doctor was initially admitted to Mathura Das Mathur (MDM) Hospital in Jodhpur in a critical state. As his condition rapidly deteriorated, senior medical staff arranged for an urgent transfer to Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital. The transfer was facilitated through a specially created green corridor, ensuring swift passage for advanced critical care.

At SMS Hospital, the doctor is reportedly receiving ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) support, a life-saving intervention typically reserved for severe cases of respiratory or cardiac failure.

The motive behind the suicide attempt remains unclear. However, the incident has sparked renewed conversations about the mounting pressures faced by medical professionals and the urgent need for mental health support within the healthcare sector.

This case follows several recent tragedies involving young doctors across India, highlighting the growing mental health challenges in the medical fraternity.

“The incident has sparked renewed conversations about the growing mental health crisis among doctors.”
