In a recent development, the detection of the JN.1 subvariant of COVID-19 in Kerala has been confirmed as part of ongoing routine surveillance by INSACOG, revealed Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director-General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), a network of genomic laboratories monitoring COVID-19 from a genetic perspective, identified this case during the assessment of a positive RT-PCR sample from Karakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, dated December 8, 2023. The sample, originally tested positive on November 18, 2023, belonged to an individual exhibiting mild Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) symptoms, who has since recovered from COVID-19.
Kerala has witnessed a surge in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks, primarily attributed to an increase in the number of samples from ILI cases referred for testing. Fortunately, a majority of these cases have been clinically mild, with individuals recuperating at home without requiring medical intervention.
To assess and bolster public health and hospital readiness, the Union Health Ministry initiated a mock drill across all health facilities in states, underway from December 13 and expected to conclude by December 18, 2023. This exercise, overseen by district collectors, aims to evaluate preparedness measures comprehensively.
Ensuring close coordination, the Union Ministry of Health remains in constant communication with the Kerala State Department of Health, actively monitoring various entry points. This collaboration emphasizes the proactive approach in managing and mitigating the spread of COVID-19 and its emerging variants.
Amidst this evolving situation, heightened surveillance, prompt action, and coordinated efforts between state and central health authorities stand pivotal in containing the transmission and ensuring the overall health security of the populace.
