A Hepatitis A outbreak has triggered a jaundice scare in Kochi and nearby areas, with health officials on high alert following a cluster of cases traced to a recent family function. The outbreak is centered in Avoly and surrounding panchayats in Muvattupuzha, approximately 47 kilometers from Kochi.

Local authorities report that the first cases emerged shortly after the family gathering, with several attendees developing symptoms consistent with Hepatitis A, including jaundice, fatigue, and abdominal discomfort. The infection, which is primarily transmitted through contaminated food and water, has since spread to others in the community, raising concerns about broader public health implications.

Health teams have initiated containment measures, including public awareness campaigns, distribution of clean drinking water, and targeted medical screenings in affected areas. Residents are being urged to maintain strict hygiene practices and avoid consuming food or water from potentially unsafe sources.

The outbreak has prompted calls for improved sanitation and monitoring of water sources, as well as swift medical intervention for those exhibiting symptoms. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further spread of the disease.

“We are working round the clock to identify and isolate new cases, and to educate the public on preventive measures,” said a local health official.
