New Delhi, March 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to providing quality and affordable medicines to all on the occasion of Jan Aushadhi Diwas. In a post on social media platform X, he stated, “Jan Aushadhi Diwas reflects our commitment to provide top-quality and affordable medicines to people, ensuring a healthy and fit India.”

Observed annually on March 7, Jan Aushadhi Diwas aims to raise awareness about the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) and promote the use of generic medicines. The initiative, launched in November 2008, is implemented through the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI). The Health Ministry reports that over 15,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras have been established across the country, providing access to essential medications at significantly lower costs.

According to official data, Uttar Pradesh leads with the highest number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras (2,657), followed by Kerala (1,528), Karnataka (1,425), and Tamil Nadu (1,363). Meanwhile, Lakshadweep has the lowest count with just one centre, followed by Ladakh (2) and Andaman and Nicobar Islands (9).

Union Health Minister JP Nadda highlighted the impact of the scheme, stating that Jan Aushadhi Kendras provide medicines at 50-90% lower prices, benefiting nearly 10 lakh people daily. The initiative has enabled citizens to collectively save around Rs 30,000 crore, which can now be allocated for family welfare, education, and well-being. Nadda also emphasized that PMBJP offers approximately 2,047 drugs and 300 surgical items catering to diverse therapeutic needs.

“The PMBJP maintains sustainability through stringent quality checks, competitive procurement, and a robust supply chain managed by PMBI,” the minister added. The government has ambitious plans to expand the initiative further, aiming to establish 25,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras by March 31, 2027.

The success of the scheme is evident in its exponential growth, with sales surging 200 times in the last decade and total sales exceeding Rs 6,400 crore. This initiative continues to redefine affordable healthcare in India, making essential medicines accessible to millions.
