Mumbai, July 29: Sudden chest pain can cause immediate fear, with many assuming a heart attack. However, health experts warn that the symptoms of gas and heart attacks can appear deceptively similar, making it vital for individuals to understand the key distinctions to avoid dangerous delays in seeking medical attention.

Doctors emphasize that while gas pain is often sharp, stabbing, or cramping, typically accompanied by bloating, belching, or relief after passing gas, heart attack pain is generally a pressure-like discomfort that may radiate to the arms, neck, jaw, or back. Associated symptoms of a heart attack often include shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or a cold sweat.

“Don’t ignore persistent pain or assume it’s just acidity,” one Mumbai-based cardiologist cautioned, noting that women, the elderly, and diabetic patients may experience atypical symptoms. “If the chest pain comes after exertion, feels heavy, or is associated with giddiness or breathlessness, always err on the side of caution and seek immediate medical help.”

Public health campaigns urge citizens not to self-diagnose or delay calling for emergency assistance when experiencing unfamiliar or intense chest pain, since timely intervention can be life-saving. As cardiovascular incidents rise in India’s urban centers, education on these differences becomes even more crucial.
