Cologne, Germany –  A team of international clinical researchers, led by Professor Dr. Oliver A. Cornely and Dr. Rosanne Sprute from University Hospital Cologne, has published a new global guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of fungal infections caused by Candida. This landmark guideline, which sets new standards for managing these infections, was recently published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

The document provides comprehensive recommendations on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of various forms of candidiasis, ranging from superficial infections to life-threatening invasive infections. It offers guidance to clinicians worldwide, incorporating innovative diagnostic procedures and the latest therapeutic strategies. Special emphasis has been placed on emerging challenges, including resistance to common antifungal treatments and the growing prevalence of Candida auris, a multi-resistant pathogen.

“With this guideline, we have taken an important step towards improving treatment for patients worldwide,” said Professor Cornely, who spearheaded the global initiative. Co-lead Dr. Sprute emphasized, “Our aim was to pool the expertise of a global network to provide doctors and health care professionals with a practical and scientifically sound tool.”

The guideline is the result of four years of intensive collaboration among more than one hundred experts from 35 countries. Professor Cornely carefully selected authors based on their expertise, geographical representation, and gender diversity. Six coordinators were appointed to structure the guideline, assign topics, identify missing elements, and oversee progress.

Endorsed by 76 international expert associations, the guideline has been recognized as an essential resource for practicing physicians, meeting the highest standards of clinical relevance and quality.

“Our compilation is unprecedented and provides a basis for improving the treatment and chances of survival of affected patients worldwide,” Professor Cornely stated, highlighting the importance of this work.
