“Our Nurses. Our Future. The Economic Power of Care” for International Nurses Day Celebration

As the world commemorates International Nurses Day on May 12th, the International Council of Nurses announces the theme for 2024: “Our Nurses. Our Future. The Economic Power of Care.” Held annually on the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, International Nurses Day recognizes the indispensable contributions of nurses to global healthcare.

Despite serving as the backbone of health-care provision, nurses often confront financial constraints and societal undervaluation of their profession. However, this year’s theme aims to challenge these perceptions and advocate for strategic investments in nursing. By highlighting the economic and societal benefits of such investments, the WHO seeks to reshape the understanding of nursing’s vital role in society.

Over the past few years, the international community has witnessed the remarkable dedication of nurses, particularly during times of crisis. From the COVID-19 pandemic to other health emergencies, nurses have been at the forefront of patient care, often risking their own well-being to ensure the health and safety of others.

In addition to recognizing the vital role of nurses, International Nurses Day serves as an opportunity to showcase the ongoing efforts to elevate the nursing profession. Through initiatives aimed at generating evidence-based knowledge on nursing and influencing national policies, organizations like the WHO,ICN are committed to ensuring the provision of high-quality, accessible, equitable, efficient, and sensitive health services.

As the world celebrates International Nurses Day under the theme “Our Nurses. Our Future. The Economic Power of Care,” it is a poignant reminder of the importance of investing in nursing to build resilient health systems and promote the well-being of individuals and communities worldwide.
