Chennai, May 1:
A severe heatwave is set to sweep across Tamil Nadu starting May 4, with the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) forecasting a sharp spike in temperatures, especially along the state’s coastal districts. The mercury is expected to rise by up to 5°C above the seasonal average, marking the onset of the peak summer phase locally known as Kathiri Veyil or Agni Natchathiram. This intense period is projected to last for 25 days, bringing extreme heat and humidity to the region.

Daytime temperatures in Chennai and other coastal areas are likely to reach around 38°C, with interior districts such as Vellore, Karur, and Salem expected to see highs surpassing 40°C. Meteorologists warn that the “feels like” temperature could exceed 46°C in some locations due to high humidity and weak sea breezes, making conditions particularly uncomfortable for residents.

In response, the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (DPH) has issued a public advisory urging people to:

  • Stay indoors between 12 noon and 3 pm.

  • Remain hydrated by drinking water frequently, even if not thirsty.

  • Avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours.

  • Use umbrellas or hats when outdoors.

  • Avoid cooking during the hottest parts of the day.

  • Never leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles.

The DPH also recommends avoiding alcohol, soft drinks, coffee, and tea during this period. Instead, residents are encouraged to consume homemade beverages such as buttermilk, lemon water, and fresh juices with a pinch of salt, as well as foods high in water content like fruits and vegetables.

Special care is advised for vulnerable groups including children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with chronic health conditions. Outdoor workers are urged to take frequent breaks in the shade and sip water every 20 minutes. Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat stress, such as dizziness or exhaustion, should seek immediate medical attention.

State authorities have taken precautionary measures, including setting up water supply points at over 1,000 locations and distributing Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets. Hospitals and primary health centres are on alert to handle heat-related emergencies.

“The maximum temperature is likely to be around 40-42°C in most interior places, indicating how the high humidity closer to the coast makes it unbearable compared to the dry continental elsewhere in the country,” said a weather blogger tracking the situation.

With the heatwave expected to last through most of May, officials urge the public to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines to minimize health risks.
