Two years after suffering a life-threatening brain aneurysm at 39 weeks pregnant, influencer and wellness advocate Jackie Miller James is speaking out about her ongoing journey of recovery, resilience, and the power of family support.
On May 19, 2023, just one week before her due date, Jackie collapsed at home due to a ruptured aneurysm. Rushed to the emergency room, she underwent an emergency C-section to deliver her daughter, Knoxly Rose, followed immediately by brain surgery to address the severe bleeding. Doctors placed her in a medically induced coma for three weeks, with her prognosis at the time so grim that her survival-and that of her newborn-was uncertain.
Against the odds, Jackie awoke and began an arduous path to rehabilitation. She spent nearly a year at specialized facilities, including Craig Hospital in Colorado and the QLI center in Nebraska, where she relearned to walk, climb stairs, and even change a diaper with one hand. With the support of her husband, Austin, her sisters Nicelle and Natalie, and her parents, Jackie has regained the ability to speak and walk-achievements her medical team once deemed impossible.
Today, at 38, Jackie lives with expressive aphasia, a condition that affects her ability to communicate fluently, and has limited function in her right arm and hand. Despite these challenges, she is fully engaged in motherhood, finding joy and motivation in her now nearly two-year-old daughter, Knoxly. “I mean, baby is healthy,” Jackie tells PEOPLE. “And I’m finding that baby is also the best thing possibly ever.”
Austin, who has been by her side throughout, recalls the small but profound victories: Jackie sitting up for the first time, standing, and eventually walking. “There’s been these incredible milestones, things you take for granted,” he said. The family credits their refusal to accept early grim prognoses and their relentless pursuit of cutting-edge treatments-including stem cell therapy, peptide treatments, and hyperbaric oxygen-for Jackie’s progress.
Jackie’s journey has also inspired her family to advocate for better access to advanced medical care and preventative measures. “We have a very acute medical system,” says Nicelle. “If you get run over in the street, it’s great for saving your life, but as far as recovery, this health system really needs to change.”
As Jackie continues to recover, her focus has shifted from the fast-paced influencer lifestyle to cherishing quiet moments with her family. “Before it was concerts and influencer events and those types of things. Less of that now,” Austin explains. Jackie’s story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, the power of community, and the hope that comes with every small step forward.
