Jakarta, May 23, 2025 – Indonesian health authorities have reported that 99 of the country’s Hajj pilgrims in Saudi Arabia have contracted pneumonia, with one fatality recorded as of May 20, 2025. The announcement was made by Liliek Marhaendro Susilo, head of Indonesia’s Hajj Health Center, in a statement released on Thursday.

According to the Indonesian Hajj Health Clinics (KKHI) in Mecca and Medina, the affected pilgrims are spread across various sectors and groups. All are currently receiving intensive care at referral hospitals in the two holy cities.

“We must be cautious, as this condition can develop into a severe illness if not treated promptly and properly,” Susilo emphasized. He explained that pneumonia, an inflammation of the air sacs in the lungs, can be life-threatening, particularly for individuals with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

Risk Factors and Health Advisory

Susilo highlighted several risk factors contributing to the outbreak, including the extreme heat in Mecca and Medina, where temperatures ranged from 41–47 degrees Celsius on Thursday. “Exposure to intense heat without adequate hydration can lead to dehydration, increasing vulnerability to infections,” he noted.

Physical fatigue due to the demanding Hajj schedule, including long journeys, obligatory rituals, and the peak rites in Armuzna, was also cited as a contributing factor. The dense crowds of millions of pilgrims further elevate the risk of transmission of respiratory infections.

To mitigate risks, Susilo urged pilgrims to take preventive measures:

  • Wear masks when coughing, sneezing, or in crowded places

  • Wash hands frequently with soap or hand sanitizer

  • Drink at least two liters of water daily

He also advised pilgrims to promptly report any health complaints to Hajj health officers or visit the nearest health post.

Ongoing Support and Monitoring

“The health of our pilgrims is our top priority. We are providing the best care possible to ensure their pilgrimage goes smoothly and that everyone returns home safely and in good health,” Susilo concluded.

The incident comes as Indonesian authorities continue to monitor health risks associated with the annual pilgrimage, including concerns over Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and the unauthorized departure of non-procedural pilgrims.
