New Delhi: In response to a surge in respiratory illness cases reported in China over recent weeks, India’s Union Health Ministry held a Joint Monitoring Group (JMG) meeting today, chaired by the Director-General of Health Services (DGHS). The meeting was attended by experts from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Disaster Management Cell, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Emergency Medical Relief (EMR) Division, and leading hospitals, including AIIMS, Delhi.

Current Situation in China

According to available data, the surge in cases in China has been attributed to seasonal pathogens, including Influenza virus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). The increase is considered typical for the ongoing flu season. WHO has been requested to provide timely updates regarding the situation to ensure a coordinated global response.

India’s Robust Preparedness

India’s health system and surveillance mechanisms are well-equipped to handle any potential increase in respiratory illnesses. Key points discussed during the JMG meeting include:

  1. Surveillance Systems: India’s ICMR and IDSP networks have a robust system in place for monitoring Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). Data from these networks indicates no unusual surge in cases across the country.
  2. Hospital Observations: Physicians from participating hospitals confirmed that respiratory illness trends remain within expected seasonal variations, with no significant spikes observed.
  3. Testing for Respiratory Pathogens: The ICMR network tests for multiple respiratory viruses, including Adenovirus, RSV, and HMPV. Current data does not show an unusual increase in these pathogens. To enhance monitoring, ICMR will expand the number of laboratories testing for HMPV and track trends year-round.
  4. Emergency Preparedness: A recent nationwide preparedness drill demonstrated that India is well-prepared to handle any increase in respiratory illnesses. Health systems and infrastructure remain vigilant and capable of responding to emerging health challenges.

Global Coordination

The Union Health Ministry continues to monitor the situation through various international channels and remains in constant communication with WHO for updates. Experts emphasized that India is not only prepared for immediate action but also committed to long-term vigilance.

The Ministry assured the public that the nation’s health systems are equipped to safeguard against potential threats and urged people to continue practicing basic respiratory hygiene and seasonal flu precautions.
