January 30, 2025 – A groundbreaking report by job site Indeed reveals that nearly four in five (78%) employees in India are planning to prioritize family time with their spouses, children, and parents over career advancement in 2025. This shift in employee priorities reflects a broader trend towards work-life harmony that extends beyond just reducing work hours.

The report, which surveyed employees across key Asia Pacific markets including India, Singapore, Australia, and Japan, sheds light on the evolving aspirations of the workforce. It indicates that Indian workers are increasingly focused on maintaining a balance between their professional responsibilities and personal lives, with a greater emphasis on mental well-being and flexibility in their jobs.

“We’re definitely seeing a shift in what matters to Indian workers,” said Rachael Townsley, Marketing Director (Australia, India, and Singapore) at Indeed. “More and more, people are telling us they want to find a better balance between work and home life. While earning more is important, the dream career for most isn’t about moving up the ladder—it’s about feeling secure, being paid fairly, and having benefits that actually make a difference.”

Townsley added, “It’s a reminder that creating workplaces where people feel supported in both their work and personal lives isn’t just nice to have—it’s essential for helping people thrive.”

In addition to prioritizing family time, over one in four (27%) Indian employees have identified increasing their earning capacity as their top resolution for 2025. However, many employees are facing financial challenges due to inflation, which continues to outpace salary growth. As a result, many workers are feeling that a competitive salary is a key factor in their career decisions.

The rising cost of living, particularly in metropolitan areas like Delhi and Mumbai, has prompted a significant portion of the workforce to seek additional income sources. The report reveals that 41% of workers are already exploring or engaging in side gigs to maintain financial stability and cope with rising expenses.

Despite the desire for higher earnings, a notable trend has emerged—many employees are less inclined to pursue leadership roles. Instead, the ideal career for Indian employees in 2025 centers around stability, fair pay, and good benefits, as opposed to traditional career advancement.

Optimism about the future remains high among Indian employees, with 55% expressing confidence in the expansion of opportunities in emerging sectors and industries. In preparation, employees are actively working to build diverse skill sets and are staying flexible and open to new job opportunities or relocations.

The report is based on a survey that included 2,507 respondents from India, as well as 1,211 from Singapore, 1,206 from Australia, and 1,202 from Japan.
