New Delhi, August 17, 2024: The Indian medical community has launched a nationwide strike to protest the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) announced a 24-hour shutdown of non-emergency medical services starting at 6 a.m. on Saturday, disrupting elective procedures and out-patient consultations across the country.

The shocking incident has evoked a wave of anger and frustration among medical professionals, drawing parallels with the 2012 gang rape and murder of a student in New Delhi. Emergency departments, however, will remain operational to ensure that urgent medical needs are met.

The IMA’s call for the strike reflects a broader concern over the perceived inadequacy of laws designed to protect women. “Women constitute the majority of our profession,” said IMA President R. V. Asokan. “We have repeatedly called for stronger measures to ensure their safety.”

More than a million medical professionals are expected to participate in the strike, highlighting the severity of their outrage and their demand for justice. This tragic event has intensified calls for reforms and greater protection for women across all sectors.
