Jhajjar, India – February 17, 2025: The Indian healthcare system is undergoing a transformative shift, with advanced medical procedures like bone marrow transplants now possible in institutes such as the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of AIIMS, Jhajjar campus. Union Health Minister JP Nadda lauded these developments at the ‘AIIMS Oncology Conclave 2025,’ emphasizing the rapid evolution of healthcare in the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking at the event, Nadda highlighted that the NCI-AIIMS has matured into a world-class healthcare provider within just six years. He noted that the institute has evolved into a referral center offering multidisciplinary, patient-centric care. He praised the dedication of doctors, healthcare workers, and administrative staff for their efforts in making this progress a reality.

Advancements in Cancer Treatment

The minister commended the high-precision and high-quality services of the nuclear medicine targeted treatment ward at NCI. He underscored that while such facilities serve as the “hardware” of a robust healthcare system, the faculty and doctors act as its “software,” ensuring smooth and effective service delivery.

Recognizing the challenges posed by cancer, Nadda acknowledged the significant emotional and economic strain associated with the disease. He visited the Vishram Sadan at NCI, developed by the Infosys Foundation, which provides cost-effective accommodation for patients’ attendants. This initiative not only offers a place to stay but also provides psychological and educational support, setting a benchmark for similar projects in the future.

Encouraging Indigenous Healthcare Innovations

As part of efforts to boost indigenous innovations, Nadda highlighted the role of the Centre for Medical Innovations and Entrepreneurship (CMIE), which acts as an incubator for healthcare startups. By granting Indian startups access to mentorship from AIIMS faculty and scientists, along with access to advanced laboratory resources at a nominal cost, CMIE is fostering a culture of healthcare innovation.

Expanding Cancer Screening and Treatment Accessibility

The government has intensified its cancer screening efforts, ensuring that individuals aged 30 and above undergo screening at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs under the National Health Mission (NHM). According to Nadda, over 26 crore people have been screened for oral cancer, 14 crore for breast cancer, and 9 crore for cervical cancer across these centers.

To make cancer treatment accessible to vulnerable populations, the government has incorporated medical, surgical, radiation, and palliative oncology under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). Nadda revealed that since the scheme’s inception, approximately 68.43 lakh hospital admissions amounting to Rs. 13,160.75 crore have been authorized for cancer-related treatments.

Citing a recent Lancet study, Nadda emphasized that timely cancer treatment initiation has significantly improved due to AB PM-JAY. Patients enrolled under the scheme saw a 90% increase in access to cancer treatment within 30 days, demonstrating its effectiveness in enhancing healthcare accessibility.
