New Delhi, July 27, 2025 — In a major stride towards strengthening the nation’s healthcare education system, the Government of India has more than doubled the number of medical colleges and significantly expanded MBBS and postgraduate (PG) medical seats over the past decade, according to recent data presented in Parliament by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

Since 2014, the count of medical colleges has surged from 387 to 780. Undergraduate (MBBS) seat capacity has grown markedly from 51,348 to 1,15,900. Similarly, PG medical seats have increased from 31,185 to 74,306, reflecting the Centre’s sustained efforts to address the needs of India’s expanding population and healthcare sector demands.

The Health Ministry, citing the National Medical Commission (NMC), shared that India now counts over 13.86 lakh registered allopathic doctors and 7.51 lakh AYUSH practitioners. Factoring in actual availability, the estimated doctor-population ratio stands at an improved 1:811, indicating better accessibility to medical professionals compared to previous years.

Government Schemes Fueling Growth

To address regional disparities and ensure equitable access to medical education across India, the government has launched several targeted schemes, including:

  • Establishing new medical colleges: 131 new institutions have become functional out of 157 approved under the centrally sponsored program to upgrade district/referral hospitals.

  • Strengthening existing colleges: Investments made to boost MBBS and PG seats in state and central government-run colleges.

  • Super Specialty Block Upgrades: 71 out of 75 approved super specialty projects under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) have been completed.

  • Expanding AIIMS Network: Of 22 new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) sanctioned, undergraduate programs have started at 19 locations, widening top-tier medical education access.
