New Delhi: India is on the verge of finalizing an official list of prescription drugs that will be reclassified as over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, allowing their sale without the need for a doctor’s prescription. The OTC sub-committee responsible for evaluating this transition is in the final stages of its report, according to Dr. Anupam Prakash, chairman of the committee.

The reclassification aims to improve access to essential medications while ensuring public health safety. Once the report is approved, select commonly used drugs will be made available at general stores and pharmacies without requiring a prescription. However, Dr. Prakash emphasized that stringent criteria are being followed to ensure that only safe and necessary medicines are included in the list.

The committee’s report will be submitted to the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) for further evaluation and approval. Unlike countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and China, India currently lacks a structured regulatory framework for OTC drug sales, despite the widespread informal availability of such medicines. The introduction of this list is expected to bring much-needed clarity and regulation to the sector.

Experts believe that transitioning select drugs to OTC status can ease the burden on healthcare systems and enhance self-care practices among consumers. However, medical professionals continue to urge caution, stressing the importance of public awareness and responsible medication use.

Disclaimer: This article is based on available reports and expert statements. The final list of OTC drugs and their regulatory framework will be subject to official approval by the concerned authorities. Consumers are advised to follow official guidelines and consult healthcare professionals when necessary.
