July 18, 2025 — New Delhi:
India has dispatched a consignment of 300,000 doses of Measles and Rubella vaccines, along with vital medical supplies, to Bolivia as the South American nation battles a growing outbreak of measles. The shipment was announced on July 17 by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), reaffirming India’s commitment to global health cooperation and solidarity with developing nations.

Bolivia’s Measles Crisis

Bolivia recently declared a National Health Emergency following a sharp rise in measles cases. President Luis Arce Catacora made the announcement after the National Strategic Council for Health Emergencies met urgently to address the escalating epidemic. As of mid-July, Bolivian health officials have confirmed 98 active measles cases, with the majority located in Santa Cruz, and further cases spread across La Paz, Potosi, Beni, Chuquisaca, Oruro, and Pando.

Efforts to curb the outbreak include a door-to-door vaccination drive and the activation of mobile vaccination brigades for early case detection. Bolivian Health Minister María Renée Castro emphasized the importance of ensuring all children receive the two necessary vaccine doses to achieve full protection.

India’s Support to the Global South

The vaccine consignment to Bolivia underlines India’s role as a key player in global health partnerships, particularly among the Global South. The MEA highlighted that these efforts represent India’s solidarity with partner countries facing health emergencies. The recent vaccine delivery comes shortly after bilateral discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bolivian President Luis Arce at the BRICS Summit, where they reviewed cooperation in critical sectors including health, pharmaceuticals, and capacity building.

India has a track record of supporting Bolivia in times of need. In August 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, India sent over six tonnes of essential medicines—including 300,000 Hydroxychloroquine tablets and protective gear—to aid the Bolivian healthcare system.

The Global Challenge

Bolivia’s measles outbreak comes against a backdrop of increasing measles cases worldwide, with notable surges in the Americas, the United States, and Europe. This global trend underscores the continued importance of robust vaccination campaigns to prevent the resurgence of once-controlled diseases.
