New Delhi, June 5, 2025:
India has reported a fresh spike in COVID-19 cases, with 864 new infections recorded in the past 24 hours. This brings the country’s active caseload to 4,302, according to the latest data released by the Union Health Ministry.

While the majority of these new cases are mild and being managed through home care, the increase has prompted health authorities to heighten surveillance and preparedness across all States and Union Territories. Since January 1, there have been 44 reported deaths, primarily among individuals with pre-existing health conditions, underscoring the ongoing risk for vulnerable populations.

Health officials are closely monitoring Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) and Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) cases. All SARI patients and a representative sample of ILI cases are being tested for COVID-19, with positive samples undergoing genome sequencing to detect any emerging variants.

In response to the uptick in cases, nationwide mock drills were conducted on June 2 to assess oxygen infrastructure and hospital preparedness. Additional drills are scheduled for June 4 and 5 to further bolster readiness.

The Union Health Ministry has urged the public to remain vigilant by maintaining hand hygiene, wearing masks when symptomatic, and avoiding crowded places. Citizens are also advised to rely exclusively on official sources such as the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) website and the Press Information Bureau (PIB) for accurate and timely updates.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to closely monitor the evolving situation and take swift action to safeguard public health.
