Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks on the growing obesity crisis in India have sparked widespread discussion, with renowned fitness coach Mickey Mehta voicing strong support for the PM’s vision. Mehta emphasized that obesity is not just a lifestyle concern but a major health hazard that, if left unchecked, could lead to severe consequences, including fatal illnesses.

Speaking to IANS, Mehta reiterated PM Modi’s concerns, describing obesity as a root cause of numerous life-threatening diseases, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and insulin resistance.

Obesity: A National Crisis

“What the Prime Minister said is absolutely correct. Obesity can lead to multiple health issues, including compromised circulation, breathing difficulties, weak digestion, and loss of energy. It also affects our mental focus, creativity, and overall well-being,” Mehta stated.

He further stressed that obesity disrupts sleep patterns and drains energy levels, often leaving individuals feeling “completely useless.” According to him, addressing obesity is imperative if India aspires to emerge as a global leader or ‘Vishwa Guru.’

“If India is to lead the world, we must first tackle the obesity epidemic. Our children are growing obese even in school, primarily due to unhealthy, processed foods,” Mehta warned.

A Holistic Approach to Wellness

Promoting a holistic health approach, Mehta advocated incorporating meditation, pranayam (breathing exercises), and a balanced diet based on Ayurveda and natural remedies into daily life. He believes that the key to combating obesity lies in transforming habits and embracing a healthier lifestyle.

“A revolution must happen in this country—a transformation in how we live and eat. Only then will India rise to global prominence,” he declared.

Mehta also emphasized the importance of traditional Indian dietary practices, particularly the use of cow ghee over refined oils.

“In Indian culture, cow ghee has been a source of nourishment for generations. It provides immunity, vitality, and longevity—essential for a strong, healthy body. If we want to become world leaders, we must embrace these age-old, beneficial practices,” he added.

Encouraging Youth to Stay Fit

As an advocate of the ‘Fit India’ movement, Mehta urged young Indians to take physical fitness seriously. He called on children and teenagers to actively participate in sports and fitness programs like Khelo India.

“We must encourage our youth to engage in sports and physical activities. Spending 30 per cent of our day on physical activities, including yoga and pranayam, is crucial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” he advised.

He also shared simple yet effective fitness tips, emphasizing consistency over intensity.

“Making small changes can lead to big transformations. Take five minutes a day to exercise, and in a month, increase it gradually. With just seven minutes a day, you can completely transform your health,” Mehta suggested.

PM Modi’s Call for a Healthier India

On January 28, PM Modi inaugurated the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun, where over 10,000 athletes will compete across various disciplines for 17 days. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister not only celebrated India’s sporting prowess but also issued a strong appeal for a healthier nation. He highlighted obesity as an emerging “health hazard” and underscored the need for proactive measures to curb its rise.

As India aspires to global leadership, experts like Mehta stress the need for collective efforts to promote health and wellness at every level of society. By embracing fitness and holistic well-being, the nation can build a healthier and more resilient future.
