The Government of India has reported major strides in combating non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD), previously known as NPCDCS, under the Department of Health and Family Welfare. The mission centers on building healthcare infrastructure, capacity building, promoting health awareness, early diagnosis, and effective management of NCDs across the nation.

Record Screening and Treatment Numbers

As of March 31, 2025, over 38.9 crore Indians have been screened for hypertension, resulting in more than 5.13 crore diagnoses and 4.74 crore currently under treatment. In the battle against oral cancer—one of the most prevalent cancers in India—32.8 crore individuals have been screened, with 94% of diagnosed cases receiving treatment.

Other major screening milestones include:

  • Diabetes: 38.77 crore screened, 3.45 crore diagnosed, 2.83 crore under treatment.

  • Breast Cancer: 17.21 crore screened, 41,386 diagnosed, 61,742 under treatment.

  • Cervical Cancer: 10.21 crore screened, 90,291 diagnosed, 97,085 under treatment.

Note: Treatment figures for some cancer cases may be underreported due to direct entry at tertiary centers.

Expanding Healthcare Infrastructure

Three years of steady progress have seen growth across key NCD care facilities:

Facility Type As on 31 Mar 2023 As on 31 Mar 2024 As on 31 Mar 2025
State NCD Cell 36 36 36
District NCD Division 708 731 753
District NCD Clinics 724 753 770
Cardiac Care Units (CCU) 210 222 233
District Day Care Centers 326 356 364
CHC NCD Clinics 6,110 6,238 6,410

Strengthening Cancer Care

The “Strengthening of Tertiary Cancer Care Centres Facilities” scheme provides one-time grants—up to ₹120 crore for State Cancer Institutes (SCIs) and up to ₹45 crore for Tertiary Cancer Care Centres (TCCCs). Currently, 19 SCIs and 20 TCCCs have been approved. These institutions serve as the backbone of advanced cancer care, research, and training, ensuring high-quality treatment and public health infrastructure improvements.

In a forward-looking move, the Union Budget 2025–26 has announced the establishment of 200 Day Care Cancer Centres (DCCCs) in district hospitals nationwide in FY 2025-26, as part of a three-year expansion plan.

Empowering Communities and Frontline Workers

The population-based NCD initiative, under the National Health Mission (NHM), targets everyone over the age of 30 for early screening. Services are delivered through trained frontline workers—Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs)—who are equipped with specialized training modules for NCD management and awareness.

Official Statement

Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, affirmed the government’s ongoing commitment to comprehensive NCD control in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on August 5, 2025.
