India has taken a pivotal role in the international fight against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) through the adoption of the London Resolution on AMR 2025. Officially announced on July 18 at the Commonwealth Medical Association (CMA) Annual Convention in London, this resolution is backed by 56 national medical associations from across Commonwealth nations. It establishes a unified global effort to address antibiotic misuse and the escalating threat of resistant microbes.

The resolution was jointly unveiled by Prof (Dr) J. A. Jayalal, CMA President, and UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Migration and Citizenship MP Seema Malhotra. Dr. Jayalal emphasized AMR as an urgent social justice issue that endangers vulnerable populations and risks undoing decades of medical progress.

India’s contribution to shaping the resolution was central, driven by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and its AMR Committee. The IMA’s innovative AMR SMART Hospital Model—which integrates infection control, antimicrobial stewardship, and medical education into hospital operations—was highlighted as a best-practice framework to be replicated throughout Commonwealth countries.

Key components of the London Resolution include:

  • Appointment of AMR focal points and establishment of AMR committees in member countries.

  • Mandatory incorporation of AMR education in undergraduate and postgraduate medical curricula.

  • Annual AMR-focused sessions at national medical conferences.

  • Adoption of a One Health approach that integrates human, animal, and environmental health sectors.

The resolution also calls for the creation of a CMA Fellowship in AMR to cultivate global expertise in research, policy, and implementation strategies.

Dr. Venkatesh Karthikeyan, National Convenor – AMR, IMA, described the resolution as a “blueprint” towards embedding antimicrobial stewardship deeply within healthcare systems, mobilizing resources, and institutionalizing education on AMR. Prof (Dr) Narendra Saini, chairman of the CMA and IMA AMR Committees and a principal drafter of the resolution, called it a transformative step that moves from advocacy to concrete action, uniting medical professionals across all levels as “AMR warriors.”

This initiative aligns with India’s broader commitments in public health, as reflected in its National Action Plan on AMR and efforts to enhance infection prevention, stewardship programs, and intersectoral collaboration based on the One Health framework.

The Commonwealth Medical Association will continue to work with national associations for the resolution’s implementation, enabling cross-country learning and regular progress monitoring to collectively and effectively tackle the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance.
