India is witnessing a significant rise in brain stroke cases, with over 1.8 million (18 lakh) new cases reported each year. Recent data reveal that a stroke occurs every 20 seconds in the country, making it a severe and growing public health challenge.

Strokes—often called “brain attacks”—rank among the leading causes of long-term disability and death in India, affecting people across all age groups. Medical experts stress that a quarter of all stroke victims in India are under the age of 40, demonstrating a worrying trend towards younger populations becoming vulnerable to this medical emergency.

According to health professionals:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure) remains the most significant risk factor, with over 50% of those affected undiagnosed.

  • Other major contributors include smoking, obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, sedentary lifestyles, and high salt intake.

  • Experts estimate that 80% of strokes are preventable with lifestyle and behavioral changes, and about half can be avoided through proper blood pressure management4.

In response to this crisis, the Indian Stroke Association (ISA), in collaboration with the Indian Association of Physicians and CGAP Raipur Chapter, has launched a nationwide awareness campaign, “Brain Stroke – Time to Act.” The initiative is designed to:

  • Increase public and professional awareness about stroke symptoms and early warning signs.

  • Promote the use of the “BE FAST” acronym: Balance loss, Eye changes, Face droop, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call emergency services.

  • Highlight the importance of the golden hour: Rapid medical intervention within 4.5 hours of stroke onset can significantly improve survival and recovery rates.

  • Conduct workshops, medical education programs, community outreach, and free blood pressure screening camps.

New treatment options—such as intravenous thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy—are becoming increasingly available, though experts warn that only a small percentage of patients currently access these life-saving therapies within the crucial time window. The ISA’s campaign also focuses on training doctors, emergency responders, and ambulance staff, as well as improving telemedicine and rural outreach, to ensure timely stroke care across urban and remote areas.

The annual economic cost of stroke to India is estimated to be over ₹4 lakh crore, reflecting the disease’s substantial impact on families and the nation’s healthcare system. Experts emphasize preventive care—especially routine blood pressure monitoring—as the most effective strategy for reducing the stroke burden.

“Every second matters because 20 lakh neurons die every minute in a brain stroke. The faster we act, the better the chances of recovery,” said Dr. P. Vijaya, President of the Indian Stroke Association.
