Chandigarh, July 31, 2025 – The Haryana chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has issued a stern warning that 600 private hospitals across the state may cease participating in the Centre’s flagship health scheme, Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). The move comes in response to significant delays and irregularities in reimbursement payments by the government.
In a formal letter addressed to the Ayushman Bharat Haryana Project Agency (AB HPA), the IMA stated that unless all pending payments up to July 15, 2025, are cleared and past assurances are honored, these hospitals will stop treating patients under the scheme from August 7, 2025. The association highlighted that long-standing issues, including delays of up to 4-5 months in receiving payments, have persisted despite multiple assurances from government officials, including Chief Minister Nayab Saini and Chief Secretary CPM Haryana, Rajesh Khullar.
The IMA cited that pending reimbursements total approximately ₹400 crore. Doctors and hospital administrators report ongoing problems such as unnecessary deductions, delayed processing of cases, difficulty in raising grievances via the official portal, and the withdrawal of NABH incentives for many hospitals due to the new re-empanelment process.
The government recently reported that more than 9.84 crore hospital admissions worth over ₹1.40 lakh crore have been authorized under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. The eligibility base was expanded in 2022 and 2024, including workers such as ASHAs, Anganwadi staff, and, most recently, 6 crore senior citizens aged 70+—irrespective of their socio-economic status. Nevertheless, IMA Haryana states that payment system inefficiencies are threatening the continued participation of private healthcare providers.
IMA Haryana has called for an urgent review and corrective measures to ensure the scheme delivers its intended benefits without unduly burdening healthcare providers or depriving patients of critical services.
