In a groundbreaking achievement, researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore have developed an innovative and cost-effective robotic device for hand rehabilitation. Dubbed ‘PLUTO’ (Plug and Train Robot), the portable device is poised to transform rehabilitation therapy by addressing the critical gap in accessibility and affordability for patients with hand impairments.

Innovation Backed by Cutting-Edge Technology
PLUTO is the first indigenous rehabilitation robot in India to be successfully tested in home settings. This device provides intense therapy, bringing rehabilitation within reach for patients recovering from conditions like stroke, spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and post-surgical hand injuries. The patented technology enables precise therapeutic movements with real-time feedback, significantly improving recovery outcomes.

“PLUTO revolutionises hand rehabilitation by providing an affordable and accessible solution for patients with post-stroke conditions. Its portability enables timely and consistent therapy at home or bedside, improving recovery outcomes and reducing dependency on caregivers,” said Prof. Sujatha Srinivasan, Head of the TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development at IIT Madras.

Proven Impact Across India
Over the past four years, PLUTO has been used by more than 1,000 patients across 11 clinics in India. It facilitates advanced therapy for hand and wrist movements through its modular and adaptive design, which includes interchangeable mechanical handles for training wrist flexion, extension, forearm rotation, and hand opening-closing.

Prof. Sivakumar Balasubramanian, from the Department of Bioengineering at CMC Vellore, highlighted the device’s success:
“More than 1,000 patients with hand impairments have benefited from therapy using PLUTO. At least 15 patients per week use it for routine therapy at CMC Vellore, and the robot has been the first of its kind to be tested in Indian homes.”

A Game-Changer for Rehabilitation
PLUTO is designed for use in hospitals, clinics, and even patients’ homes, making it a versatile tool for rehabilitation. The affordability and portability of the device aim to reduce the financial burden on healthcare systems and patients alike.

The innovative device integrates therapeutic gaming features and a single actuator mechanism to enhance engagement and efficiency during therapy sessions. It minimizes production costs without compromising on functionality, thereby promoting wider adoption in India’s healthcare sector.

Commercialisation and Sustainability
The PLUTO technology was licensed through the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) of IIT Madras and has been commercialized by Thryv Rehab Solutions. With its modular, energy-efficient design and use of recyclable materials, PLUTO is a step toward sustainable healthcare innovation.

As India continues to tackle challenges in healthcare accessibility, PLUTO represents a transformative development in rehabilitation technology. Its ability to bridge the gap between affordability and advanced care paves the way for a brighter future in patient recovery and wellness.
