Kanpur, India – February 23, 2024
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Conlis Global, a leading biotechnology company based in Canada, to license an innovative technology aimed at enhancing bone healing and regeneration.
The groundbreaking technology, known as Hydroxyapatite based Porous Composite Scaffolds, represents a significant advancement in the field of orthopedics. Developed indigenously at IIT Kanpur, these scaffolds are biodegradable and possess both osteoinductive and osteopromotive properties, crucial for bone regeneration.
Professor Ashok Kumar from the Department of Biological Sciences & Bioengineering at IIT Kanpur explained, “The technology facilitates bone regeneration in a biocompatible manner by acting as a carrier for bone-active biomolecules, delivering them directly to the site of an implant.”
He further highlighted that these scaffolds offer a promising solution for reconstructing and repairing bone defects, addressing the limitations and complications associated with existing market technologies.
The functionalized scaffolds, designed to fill large-sized bone defects while preserving connectivity and structural integrity, promote tissue formation, mineralization, and rapid defect healing. Additionally, they serve as bone substitutes, overcoming the limitations of autografts and reducing the risk of infection and immune-related complications.
“This technology provides an innovative approach for the delivery of bone-active molecules, antibiotics, or other drugs, offering solutions for bone pathologies, irregular bone defects, and dental applications,” Prof. Ashok Kumar added.
Conlis Global CEO, Dr. Sumrita Bhat, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize the treatment of bone and joint disorders. “We are thrilled to partner with IIT Kanpur to bring this innovative solution to the market. It represents a significant step forward in treating bone and joint disorders, and we look forward to taking this to market to benefit patients worldwide,” she stated.
The collaboration between IIT Kanpur and Conlis Global underscores the importance of academic-industry partnerships in translating cutting-edge research into practical solutions for healthcare challenges. Through this joint effort, the innovative bone healing technology is poised to make a significant impact on patient care globally.
