Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur have made a remarkable breakthrough with the development of a new low-cost, paper-based analytical device capable of detecting glucose levels on the spot when connected to smartphones.

The device utilizes lab-based functionalized biodegradable paper that undergoes a color change based on the concentration of glucose present. By simply connecting the device to a smartphone, users can access quick, easy-to-read, and personalized results in real-time.

“The beauty of this device lies in its simplicity and accessibility. It provides instant glucose testing results without the need for technical laboratory settings. Moreover, it is designed to be cost-effective and environmentally friendly, with the current production cost as low as Rs. 10 in the lab. We aim to further reduce this cost during mass production to Rs. 5,” explained the researchers in a statement.

While paper-based analytical devices have been utilized previously, they often required specific light conditions to function effectively. However, the IIT Jodhpur researchers integrated machine learning techniques into the device, ensuring compatibility with all smartphones and seamless transmission of information under various lighting conditions.

Ankur Gupta, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Jodhpur, emphasized the significance of smartphone integration, stating, “Smartphones offer seamless connectivity with other technologies and platforms. The ability to connect our smartphone-based detection framework to a larger network or database can facilitate remote monitoring, data storage, and result sharing, which is vital for healthcare professionals and researchers.”

Furthermore, the researchers highlighted the device’s adaptability for screening and diagnostic analysis of various diseases, including uric acid levels. The study detailing their innovative approach has been published in the prestigious journal ACS Publications.

“This study underscores the potential of our developed system for initial disease screening at the user’s end. By leveraging machine learning techniques, our platform can deliver reliable and accurate results, thereby enhancing initial healthcare screening and diagnosis for various diseases,” Ankur Gupta concluded.

The breakthrough achieved by the IIT Jodhpur researchers promises to revolutionize glucose monitoring and healthcare diagnostics, offering a cost-effective, user-friendly solution that has the potential to impact millions of lives worldwide.
