In a significant move for India’s healthcare and technology sectors, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Center of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare (AI-CoE). The signing ceremony took place at IIT Delhi, with Prof. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi, and Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, formalizing the partnership.

A National Push for AI-Driven Healthcare

The AI-CoE will serve as the primary execution body for a ₹330 crore grant awarded last year by the Ministry of Education under the “Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India” initiative. This funding followed a rigorous and highly competitive selection process, underscoring the national importance of the project.

The center’s mission is to develop cutting-edge AI-based solutions to support key national health programs, enhance public health delivery, and improve healthcare accessibility—especially for remote and marginalized communities. It aims to act as a hub for both national and international research, leveraging indigenous AI technologies to transform India’s public health landscape.

Leadership and Vision

The initiative will be led by Dr. Krithika Rangarajan, Chief Project Manager at AIIMS Delhi, and Prof. Chetan Arora, Chief Project Manager at IIT Delhi. Both leaders emphasized a patient-centric approach, with Dr. Rangarajan stating, “Our focus remains clear—placing patients at the center and building systems that benefit every citizen.” Prof. Arora highlighted the center’s ambition to upskill healthcare providers and develop scalable AI solutions for underserved populations.

Prof. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi, remarked, “This MoU marks the beginning of transformative collaborative research with the potential to reshape healthcare across the country.” Prof. Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, added, “A partnership between AIIMS and IIT Delhi can drive innovation in affordable healthcare. We are proud to shape this national center of excellence and look forward to a measurable impact on Indian lives”.

A Model for Global Collaboration

The AI-CoE builds upon a strong history of collaboration between IIT Delhi and AIIMS Delhi, aiming to set a new benchmark for integrating healthcare and AI research not only in India but globally. The center is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing affordable, accessible, and high-quality healthcare through technology.
