The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of encouraging students to “spend one day as a scientist,” successfully organized the S.H.I.N.E. initiative—Science, Health and Innovation for Nextgen Explorers—a nationwide student outreach program. Held on August 7th and 8th, 2025, the event attracted over 13,000 students from grades 9 to 12, representing more than 300 schools across 39 districts in 16 states and union territories.

This unique program opened the doors of various ICMR institutes and Department of Health Research Model Rural Health Research Units, inviting young learners to engage deeply with the world of health and biomedical research. The initiative aimed to ignite scientific curiosity, foster innovation, and inspire future generations to pursue careers in science and public health, contributing to India’s vision of becoming a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047.

Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary of the Department of Health Research and Director General of ICMR, emphasized the importance of this engagement, stating, “This is a unique initiative of ICMR to ignite scientific curiosity, foster innovation and inspire the next generation of health researchers. Today is not just a visit, it’s an invitation to step into the shoes of a scientist.” He encouraged students to observe, question, and experience firsthand the spirit of scientific inquiry to help shape India’s scientific future.

Throughout the two-day event, students participated in a variety of interactive activities such as guided laboratory tours, research exhibitions, poster walks, video presentations, and live demonstrations of cutting-edge scientific work. They also interacted directly with ICMR scientists who shared insights into their research journeys and day-to-day work in public health. To add a playful and engaging touch, a mascot named Dr. Curio guided the students, making the learning experience lively and accessible.

Among the highlights were four specially curated short films showcasing ICMR’s significant contributions, including the development of Covaxin, India’s indigenous COVID-19 vaccine; the iDRONE project for innovative healthcare delivery; national efforts to eliminate tuberculosis; and Vishanu Yudh Abhyas, a nationwide simulation drill testing pandemic preparedness.

The event also coincided with the 104th birth anniversary of Dr. Vulimiri Ramalingaswami, a revered Indian medical scientist and former ICMR Director General, whose legacy continues to inspire medical research and public health efforts in India.

The S.H.I.N.E. initiative stands as a testament to ICMR’s commitment to promoting scientific temper and innovation among youth, highlighting the vital role of research in advancing public health and shaping the nation’s future.
