Yoga played a significant role in making Indian astronaut Rakesh Sharma fearless and adaptable during his space missions. NV Raghuram, Sharma’s yoga teacher and the founder of Yoga Bharati, highlighted this at a conference titled ‘Yoga for Space.’ The event was held at S-Vyasa University in Bengaluru to mark the 10th edition of International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2024, organized by the Central Council for Research in Yoga & Naturopathy (CCRYN) in collaboration with Svyasa.
The conference brought together experts from various fields to discuss how yoga can enhance society, including its impact on astronauts. According to the Ministry of AYUSH, the initiatives aim to promote vigorous yoga practice and raise awareness about its benefits, aligning with the IDY 2024 theme of fostering a healthy society through healthy individuals.
Dr. Raghavendra Rao, Director of CCRYN, emphasized the inclusivity and diversity of the IDY journey, showcasing yoga practices in extreme conditions worldwide, including on land, in the ocean, and now, in space. Dr. BR Ramakrishnan, Pro-Chancellor of S-Vyasa University, spoke about integrating ancient wisdom with space science, highlighting the fusion of Eastern and Western knowledge.
This year’s IDY celebrations will take place in Srinagar, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the event. Over the past decade, IDY has achieved four Guinness World Records. In a special initiative, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will host ‘Yoga for Space,’ where all ISRO scientists and officials will practice yoga together, following the prescribed guidelines.
