With the widespread use of earphones and EarPods, especially among young people, health experts are sounding the alarm about the potential risks these devices pose to hearing health. Prolonged exposure to loud volumes through these devices can lead to irreversible hearing damage, according to experts who spoke out on Monday.

The Dangers of High Volume

Listening to music or other audio at high levels through headphones or earphones can significantly damage the delicate structures within the ear. Dr. Rakesh Verma, an ENT expert, explains that exposure to excessive noise levels, particularly sounds exceeding 130 decibels, can cause pain and lead to permanent damage. “High bass earphones can be especially harmful,” he warns. “Once the tiny hair cells in the inner ear are damaged, they cannot regenerate, resulting in partial or complete deafness over time.”

This risk is particularly high among young people who often use these devices for extended periods without breaks. According to Dr. Vijay Verma, a Consultant Allergy & ENT Specialist at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, “Prolonged use of earphones, especially at high volumes, can cause noise-induced hearing loss, tinnitus, and hyperacusis.”

The Importance of Moderation and Hygiene

Experts recommend several measures to mitigate these risks. First and foremost, it is essential to use earphones and EarPods in moderation and at a low volume. “Noise-cancelling headphones, used at moderate volumes, can help reduce the need to turn up the sound, further safeguarding your hearing health,” Dr. Vijay Verma suggests.

In addition to volume control, maintaining proper hygiene is crucial. The enclosed environment created by earphones can lead to ear infections, such as otitis externa or swimmer’s ear, particularly when hygiene is neglected. “Avoid sharing earphones to prevent the spread of infections,” Dr. Rakesh Verma advises.

Regular Hearing Check-ups

Given the potential long-term effects of using these devices, regular hearing check-ups are recommended. Early detection of hearing loss can help manage the condition and prevent further deterioration.

Protecting Your Hearing

In conclusion, while earphones and EarPods are convenient for enjoying music and other audio content, it’s vital to be aware of the risks associated with their prolonged use. To protect your hearing, use these devices in moderation, keep the volume low, practice good hygiene, and consider noise-cancelling options. These steps can go a long way in preserving your ear health and preventing irreversible damage.
