Gurugram, India – A 25-year-old hospital technician has been arrested in connection with the alleged sexual assault of an air hostess while she was on ventilator support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a prominent private hospital in Gurugram. The arrest follows an intensive investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Gurugram police, which involved analysing footage from approximately 800 CCTV cameras.

The accused, identified as Deepak, originally from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, had been working as a treatment machine technician in the hospital’s ICU for the past five months. Police apprehended him in the Sadar Police Station area on Friday. According to a police official privy to the investigation, Deepak has confessed to the crime during questioning. He is scheduled to be produced before a court on Saturday, where police intend to seek custody for further interrogation.

The investigation was launched after a 46-year-old air hostess filed a complaint alleging she was sexually assaulted on April 6th while incapacitated and on a ventilator in the hospital’s ICU. The victim, who was in Gurugram for company training, had been admitted following a health deterioration after a drowning incident. She was initially admitted to one private hospital before being moved to the facility where the alleged assault occurred on April 5th.

According to her complaint, filed after her discharge on April 13th when she informed her husband, she was conscious enough to be aware of the assault but unable to speak or react due to being on ventilation. She also mentioned the presence of two nurses nearby during the incident. Her husband promptly alerted the police.

Responding to the gravity of the allegations, Gurugram Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora established the SIT on Thursday, headed by DCP Headquarters Arpit Jain. The SIT comprised eight distinct police teams tasked with gathering evidence and identifying the perpetrator.

“While investigating the incident, eight police teams checked the footage of 800 CCTV cameras installed in the hospital, and around 50 hospital staff, including doctors, were questioned,” stated DCP Jain. “Keeping in mind the seriousness of the incident, the police teams investigated every angle… as a result of which the police got great success in identifying the accused.”

The extensive investigation involved multiple senior officers, including ACP Sadar Yashwant, ACP CAW Kavita, and the Station House Officers of Sadar and Women Police West stations.

The hospital administration confirmed they have suspended the accused employee based on information received from the police. “We have been informed that the police has identified a suspect who has been taken into custody… On the basis of information provided to us by the police, at present, we have suspended the suspect employee,” a statement from the hospital’s medical superintendent read. The hospital added it would continue to fully support the police investigation.

Police registered the case at the Sadar Police Station following the victim’s complaint and are continuing their investigation.
